Before starting any deck or porch repair, we thoroughly assess the condition of the wood. This inspection identifies signs of rot, loose fasteners, and structural weakness. When possible, we also check the underside of the deck to evaluate the supporting structure. Any rotten boards are replaced, and adjacent components are inspected to ensure rot hasn’t spread.
Next, we remove all damaged boards and fasteners and install new materials.
Depending on the previous coating - such as water-repellent finishes or oil-based paints- we clean the wood using appropriate products, usually a liquid cleaner, hose, stiff brush, and sanding tools to remove old finishes. If mold is present, we treat the wood with anti-mold solutions or alkali cleaners, then rinse thoroughly.
We then apply a protective finish, selecting water- and UV-resistant sealants, paints, or varnishes. All surfaces, including board ends, cracks, and joints, are treated to prevent future rot and extend the life of the deck.
For new deck or porch installations, we recommend pre-finishing the boards. Alternatively, composite materials can be used for enhanced durability, as they come pre-treated and fully protected.
